Lots of us have ended up in situations where our relationships aren’t living up to our expectations. Many times, we don’t set the right expectations from the beginning.
A recent article in Psychology Today told us how to tackle the problem. Follow this advice to figure out what you need from a relationship. Then make sure you get it!
Be ready to compromise your dating expectations.
First, decide what’s most important to you in a partner. You might imagine yourself with a cat lover, but meet someone who is more of a dog person.
Always expect these key values!
We all need to make compromises but always keep some key dating expectations. This includes: affection, compassion, respect, consideration, time, interest, intimacy, and generosity from your partner!
Give your partner these things as well.
If you expect things from your partner, then make sure you respect their expectations! You need to deliver on those fundamental relationship rights.
As always, communication is key.
Communicate your thoughts, but listen to your partners’ dating expectations as well. Specifically, you may want to look at this list together, discuss which of the items are most important to you, and what expressing them looks like to you.
Beware of false dating expectations.
Finally, never forget that popular culture and dating apps creates plenty of unfair dating expectations. Cindee Doll leads the Clients Connection Center here at Heartts, and she had this advice:
“With online dating, you’re not allowed to be real. Online dating is the epitome of a false projection of your life.”
